What's Dan doing in Burkina Faso?

As many of you know, I will be leaving for Burkina Faso, as part of an opportunity to participate in a Leave for Change program supported by my employer MD Physician Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Canadian Medical Association.  After a successful application and interview process, I received a mandate to support SEMUS; a grass roots NGO focused on healthcare in the northern region of Burkina Faso. What follows is a little more information about both of these organizations.

Leave for Change® is a corporate volunteering initiative that enables employees from participating organizations to transform part of their annual vacation into a 3 to 4 week volunteer assignment in a developing country. Employers invest in the development of their human resources and demonstrate leadership in corporate social responsibility. Employees put their knowledge and skills to work in an international development project, expand their personal and professional horizons and acquire a deeper understanding of broader global issues.

If you'd like to learn more about how the Leave for Change program can enhance the employment experience within your organization feel free review the material on Uniterra's website site or contact me directly.

SEMUS (Solidarité et Entraide Mutuelle au Sahel) is a non profit organization based in Yako, Burkina Faso.  As a grass roots organization, it concentrates its efforts in the northern provinces of Burkina Faso, and has 5 main approaches to fighting poverty and building human capacity.

1. Actions of solidarity: Donations of food and medicine, child sponsorship, orphans and other vulnerable children.2. HIV/AIDS: HIV prevention, testing, and care for those living with HIV/AIDS.
3. Food security: Cereal banks and nutrition education
4. Income generating: shop selling products made from recycled materials, a hostel, and a pharmacy selling medicine at affordable prices, and other items sold are honey, dairy and grain products produced on local SEMUS farms.
5. Agriculture and the environment: The organization runs a beekeeping project, experimental farming projects to restore land, and efforts to stop deforestation.

This organization is a central force in the region; both promoting and participating in a diverse range of projects to ensure tomorrow is a better day for people in need.
